Over the last few months we have been tinkering with our website, beefing up the content here, streamlining sections there, and working to give it a whole new look and feel. After weeks and weeks of diligent labor, we are almost ready to reveal the results, which will be live online soon.

You can look forward to new photos and videos of Mark’s kinetic wind sculptures, including all of his latest works. We are actually working on finalizing this content as I type!

You will also find a virtual tour of the gallery on the newly revamped site. We are housed in a stunning historic farmhouse situated amid gorgeous gardens in a prime location on Canyon Road, one of the finest arts districts in the country. Mark’s kinetic sculptures lend a colorful and peaceful aura to the gardens as they twirl in the spring breeze. We love our location and are thrilled to be able to share it with those who live outside of Santa Fe.

The tour will also feature gallery director and in-house artist Charles Veilleux speaking about our kinetic wind sculptures. He will elaborate on installation, color options, the selection of patinas, the ideal placement of a piece, wind shadows, and more. If you are thinking about buying a kinetic sculpture, or are just interested in learning more about the fascinating process behind them, the video will provide a wealth of information.

We will also be updating the photographs on the site with the latest work by each of our artists as it comes in.

Check back over the next few weeks to get the full Mark White online experience. There will be lots of new content to explore, and we would love to know what you think!

Last week we looked at Mark White’s contribution to our first show of the season, “Evolving Visions: Santa Fe to L.A.,” which will feature work by Mark and his son, Ethan White.

While Mark’s work is a vivid expression of his ever-evolving vision of the natural world, Ethan’s paintings express a more internal world. He views his work as a way to contemplate and understand ideas and notions of society and our place in it.

“I am currently using my work to reflect on three distinct, individual ideas as well as their confluence,” Ethan says.

The first idea is about the measuring of success in any field by the achievement of “celebrity” status and the relationship between perceived success and personal satisfaction or sense of self (identity).

The second idea explores the overarching influence of a grand vista. It looks at how a magnificent view of the ocean anchors us and keeps us returning to ask the questions that matter.

The third idea addresses how movement, or even implied movement, creates a fourth and fifth dimension. Movement creates time and indicates intention or integrity in an expression.

“I am looking to express these ideas individually, as well as the confluence of two or three ideas through my visual art, as well as through a dance theater piece which I am co-creating with my wife Nikki White,” he says.

The performance, “Before Romeo,” explores how the heroine overcomes the dysfunctional relationships she has sought as a result of the influence contemporary American celebrity culture has exerted on her identity and the qualities she seeks in a partner.

Scroll on for a preview of the work Ethan will have in the show, and make sure you come by the gallery this summer to see the complete body of work. “Evolving Visions: Santa Fe to L.A.” will open with an artists’ reception from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 13 and run through August 5.

You can read more about Ethan’s work as a dancer at www.whitetreefineart.com.

The summer season at the gallery kicks off with a father-son show by Mark and Ethan White entitled “Evolving Visions: Santa Fe to L.A.”

For his contribution to the show, Mark will showcase his newest oil paintings. After several years away from the medium, he has returned to oil painting with a fresh outlook and an ever-evolving vision of the world around him.

“My first memory of drawing or painting was outdoors was when I was 18 years old,” he says. “Forty-five years later, I still prefer to study and paint the world directly. The world is constantly evolving, and I try to keep evolving my vision of that world. These recent paintings using oil paint on canvas to reflect that evolution.”

The photos here are a preview of the paintings that will be in the show. Make sure you come by the gallery this summer to see the complete body of work. “Evolving Visions: Santa Fe to L.A.” will open with an artists’ reception from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 13 and run through August 5.

Mom deserves something special this year for Mother’s Day. Why not forgo the tried yet tired Sunday brunch and make a weekend of it? After all, is one day really enough time to show her how much you care?

Arts and history events at the gallery will provide the perfect opportunity to shake things up a bit and devote some quality time to the woman who has always been your biggest supporter.

Things will kick off on Saturday, May 12 with Passport to the Arts, a fundraiser for the Santa Fe Public Schools and a celebration of the artists of Canyon Road. Galleries up and down Canyon Road’s half-mile stretch will open their doors for a day of cultural events, including shows by local student musicians, silent auctions, a quick draw, and an evening concert in the parking lot of Ventana Fine Art on lower Canyon Road. Make sure you stop in at the gallery for a chance to bid on pieces by our artists, Mark White, Conrad Kern and Charles Veilleux, in the silent auction.

Sunday will bring the Historic Santa Fe Foundation’s annual Mother’s Day tour of Santa Fe’s historically significant properties. In honor of New Mexico’s centennial, this year’s walking tour will focus on buildings along Canyon Road that appear on the state’s 1912 King’s Map.

We are proud to occupy one of the oldest buildings on Canyon Road and are excited to learn more about the space that does such an exemplary job of showcasing our artists’ work.

The weather in May is ideal for a stroll up Canyon Road. Whether you just want to peek your head in a few galleries and enjoy the atmosphere or are a dedicated history buff, the afternoon will have something to offer.

The tour will run from 2-4 p.m. You can find more information, including ticket prices and how to sign up, on the Historic Santa Fe Foundation website, www.historicsantafe.org, or by calling 505-983-2567.

Each of the events benefits a charitable foundation, so you can feel twice as good about the weekend’s festivities. Money raised during Passport to the Arts will benefit arts programs at the Santa Fe Public Schools, while the historic properties tour benefits the architectural conservation efforts of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation.

We look forward to seeing you and your mom at the gallery!

Every spring we at the gallery get excited for the upcoming show season and array of events on Canyon Road that the warmer months bring. As soon as the days begin to get longer and the flowers start to peek out of the soil, we begin to see old friends going for afternoon strolls down Canyon Road and new faces begin to pop up in the gallery. It is our favorite time of year to be in Santa Fe.

This year Canyon Road will host a plethora of spring events that we are excited about.

Kicking off the start of the busy summer season on the road, Passport to the Arts is a new annual event designed to raise money for arts programs in the Santa Fe public schools. We love any reason to get out and enjoy art, but one that benefits arts education is a true cause for celebration.

The event will be held on Saturday, May 12—Mother’s Day weekend—and will feature student musicians from the Santa Fe public schools, who will be playing at different venues throughout the day. A silent auction and a fun quick draw featuring local artists will also take place. And an outdoor evening performance by jazz pianist John Rangel will cap off the day’s events.

With a half-mile stretch of galleries, restaurants, and boutiques set amid a historic neighborhood showcasing traditional Santa Fe architectural styles, Canyon Road is the perfect place to while away a sunny spring Saturday—especially when it’s for a good cause.

We hope to see you in the gallery for Passport to the Arts!

Everyone at the gallery would like to thank those who participated and helped make it such a wonderful event. Bids came in from all over the country, and our artists are always thrilled to hear such positive feedback on their work.

The auction started on February 20th and ran through March 5. Four of our artists contributed up to ten pieces, and many happy bidders took home amazing works at our special auction prices.

If you missed out on your favorite piece at the auction, don’t worry. Just stop by the gallery on Canyon Road. We still have pieces that are similar to what we sold in the auction, and we have many new works of art coming in soon. You can also give us a call or e-mail us (505-982-2073 or info@markwhitefineart.com) to see if the painting that caught your eye in the auction is still available.

We had a great time at this year’s auction, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event. The details are still in the works, but mark your calendar for just after the New Year. You don’t want to miss out on another chance to take home an original piece by Mark White, Ethan White, or any other artist who chooses to participate next year.

While he may be best known for his innovative kinetic wind sculptures that harness the power of the nature to create art in the sky, Mark White has also always been a painter. His latest work is a return to experimentation and exploration with oils.

In the past he has used metal as his canvas, adding oils to create an earthy contrasting layer and yet still allowing the reflective surface of the metal to shine through. His great experience painting on metal is informing his newest work with oils on canvas and wood panels.

He has recently spent a great amount of time painting in plein air, rediscovering his passion for the medium. Stop by the gallery to see his journey with oil painting.

Santa Fe’s annual ArtFeast is one of the city’s most beloved events, breaking up the cold weather blues and getting the community out and mingling again.

The team at Mark White Fine Art was thrilled to participate in the tour again this year. We partnered up with chef extraordinaire David Sandberg and the brew masters of Blue Corn Café and Brewery to bring our visitors tasty treats paired with a satisfying swig of ale. The only gallery to offer beer, we like to think we got the festivities off to a swinging start at the foot of Canyon Road.

David’s creative menu drew inspiration from the shape and design of Mark’s wind sculptures, as well as from the motifs of Charles’s paintings. Each food item was carefully paired with a beer chosen to compliment its flavors. Juan Tons (or beef cachetes braised in beer and wrapped in won tons) were paired with the crisp citrus flavors of the Zythos single hop pale ale, while the richness of red devil truffle cakes was enhanced with a robust porter.

By the time the celebration came to a close at 8 p.m., we had served over 700 people and were fresh out of food, but full of excitement and gratitude for another great year of the Edible Art Tour. And, to top it all off, we had both of the pieces up for silent auction sell. The 2012 ArtFeast was a wild success, meaning art students around the city will be benefitting from the fun throughout the year.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the gallery Friday night! We hope you have recuperated from your food comas! The “Southwestern Fiesta” was fun and we look forward to pairing with Chef David Sandberg from Blue Corn next year.
